Have you ever read "Golden the Ship Was-Oh! Oh! Oh!" by Cordwainer Smith? This reminded me of it, a little, and I think you'd like it.
I've read all of Cordwiner Smith, but a long time ago. He's one of my favourites.
Short but sweet; has the air of a space-age fairy tale about it.
